This O.W.L.S. course discusses the procedures used for planning subsurface investigations and provides guidelines for site reconnaissance and sources of existing geological and historic data. Also presented are guidelines for determining subsurface information by visual examination during drilling and the basic operations for boring and sampling equipment. The student will gain an understanding of the types of subsurface investigation and requirements for the minimum number of borings and the depths and spacing for boring layouts. Basic engineering analysis techniques and typical recommendations will be discussed.

Speaker Biography


Kerry Cooper, P.E.

Kerry Cooper, P.E., is a Senior Geotechnical Engineer with SUMMIT Engineering, Laboratory & Testing, a consulting firm based in the Charlotte, NC area.  Mr. Cooper has more than 30 years ofprofessional experience in geotechnical exploration, construction materials testing, and hazardous and solid waste landfill engineering throughout the southeastern United States.   He carries professional engineering registrations in NC and SC, and is affiliated with industry trade groups including the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society of Foundation Engineers and the National Society of Professional Engineers.  Some of his extensive project experience includes work on deep foundation design, pavement design, transportation infrastructure, preparation of work and safety plans, site suitability studies, landfill design and permitting, and project management for both horizontal and vertical construction projects.  He holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering (specializing in Geotechnical Engineering) from The Citadel, in Charleston, SC.
