Build with Strength: The Case for Building Resilient High-Performance Schools

Durability is the ultimate ingredient of sustainable architecture and profitability. Educators are realizing that the promise of first-cost is not the best option for facilities in which to educate children. From storm/wind/moisture resistance to ICC 500 compliance, energy efficient to Net-Zero facilities/campuses, lower insurance to controlled operational costs, the former barriers to the concrete structure increasingly have quickly eroded. When educators, school board members, and facilities managers are equipped with effective and concise information about the benefits of resilient concrete structures, the results are facilities that have the ability to not only protect and shelter, but also demonstrate how construction can be used to educate and inform. Building systems play a large role in deciding the safety and resiliency of structures. Through design solutions demonstrated in this workshop, we can focus on strength as well as disaster response, resulting in investments that are secure and generating long-term value for not only our public school systems that own these buildings, but also the families of the children that occupy and visit them as well.
