AIA Asheville: Climate Symposium

Climate Adaptive Design: Where Building Science Meets Climate Science

Date: November 4, 2016 8:00 am – 4:30 pm
Venue: The Collider: 1 Haywood Street, Ashevile NC, 28801

The Collider is once again partnering with the Asheville section of The American Institute of Architects (AIA Asheville) to present a daylong symposium for architects, building design professionals, planners, and others interested, featuring presentations from top experts in the fields of architecture, building science, and climate science.

At “Climate Adaptive Design: Where Building Science Meets Climate Science,” design professionals can earn six AIA-accredited Health, Safety and Welfare learning units while enjoying a day of networking with industry peers. Last year’s event drew participants from as far away as New York City, Atlanta, Raleigh, Fayetteville, Charlotte, and beyond.

Symposium Learning Objectives
This course will provide an understanding of the latest climate and building science. It will incorporate problem-based learning and draw from numerous case studies to help participants identify the role of architects in addressing climate change challenges. Participants will learn methods to achieve climate adaptive design from experts in both building science and climate science. Learning objectives:
-Participants will learn about building science and how to design for existing and future climate conditions.
-Participants will be able to identify building methods commonly used in other regions that can enhance adaptation to climate conditions.
-Participants will learn from leading climate scientists the current state of climate change, attribution, and projections for the future.
-Participants will be able to use publicly available tools and resources to understand vulnerability to natural hazards and climate change and adapt building designs to improve performance.

Registration for this daylong event ranges from $95 for government employees and students to $195 for AIA members and $225 for non-members. Early bird rates are available.
