Legislative Day 2018

Location: Begins at AIA NC Center for Architecture & Design
14 East Peace Street
Raleigh, NC 27604

Make your plans now to join AIA North Carolina and our strategic partners in the North Carolina Recovery Coalition--Carolinas AGC, ACEC NC, and PENC-- for the 2018 NC Legislative Day in Raleigh, June 6.

Join your peers from the design and construction community as we show our strength as an industry to members of the NC General Assembly, as well as spend time face-to-face with influential state legislators.

Priority Issues for 2018:
  • Oppose HB 590 Interior Designer Practice Act- As crafted HB 590 allows certified interior designers to assume responsibilities and practice way beyond their education and training in the built environment. The House passed the bill from its chamber last year. We must focus on persuading the Senate that the bill in its current configuration is a danger to the citizens of North Carolina.
  • Assist Counties with K-12 School Construction- Rural communities have faced increasing difficulties in generating enough revenue to keep pace with their K-12 school facility needs and replace outdated schools. There is a proposal in the General Assembly to pass an almost $2 billion bond to assist school districts with their construction needs.
  • Transportation Funding - As auto efficiency and changing driving habits have contributed to our decline in stable sources of transportation funding, North Carolina will see a 43% increase in population-- 13.5 million by 2040-- placing further strain on the transportation network. To have a safe and efficient transportation network that fosters economic prosperity and grows jobs, our current way of doing business does not add up. If we find no new ways to raise transportation revenue, we face a projected $60 billion gap in funding by 2040.
  • Construction Workforce Development - The construction industry in North Carolina is having the most difficult time of any industry finding qualified workers. A national survey finds that nearly 2/3 of the contractors are facing this challenge. Hiring challenges delay projects, drive up wages, affects project quality and stifles economic growth. Public schools have all but stopped promoting construction jobs in career counseling and it's clear the industry has an image problem when trying to attract young workers.

Find Your House and Senate Reps

This year we will be making a concerted effort to match each legislator with a member of AIA who lives in their district in hopes of building long-term relationships. We want our legislators to have access to reliable information about issues associated with the built environment and know our members are among the best resources available. Your participation this year is very important towards that goal. When you register for the day you will be asked to list your House and Senate representatives. The link below will allow you to find them.
