An interesting feature article from AIA Architect magazine last year, 'Designing for Security: A modern-day search for the intersection of safety and beauty' considers a modern-day search for the intersection of safety and beauty.

What role should architecture should play when it comes to security? The answer isn't installing the latest electronic gear and software package, nor is it just a consideration for building types with highly specific occupancy considerations. How, then, should architects design safe and secure spaces that are also beautiful?

To ensure an appropriate and cost-effective level of security, architects need to acquaint themselves with the range of security factors that affect design. Security Design in Architecture will familiarize attendees with identifying vulnerabilities, tailoring security, and ensuring a beautiful design that offers reassurance.

The program incorporates a 'site visit' of PNC Arena, which includes a FEMA site vulnerability assessment, access control, egress options and the following:
  • Explanation of what constitutes a vulnerability, identifying vulnerabilities, and understanding identified vulnerability indications.
  • Numerical rating system for the vulnerability and justification of the rating.
  • Integrating and maintaining corporate design aesthetics in tandem with applicable high-security modifications.
  • Real world examples where site assessment and recommendations were either not requested, or client failed to amend, which resulted in future loss of government and private sector contracts after security breach.
