AIA Asheville: Advocacy Workshop on HB590

The Interior Design License bill presently sits in the Rules Committee of the Senate and when the General Assembly reconvenes in May, 2018 it will pass to the Commerce Committee and to the floor for a vote.  If it passes as written, a two year technical school graduate who may have never submitted plans to building officials will be permitted to seal interior architectural documents in every occupancy classification named in the building code.

26 Senate no-votes are needed to stop this bill from becoming law. Senators representing Asheville are almost 1/3 this number.

To that end, on Friday, February 23, AIA Asheville has planned a workshop (that will give you 2 HSW LUs) that will do three things:
Give you detailed understanding of the content of HB590 and its full implications with respect to Health Safety and Welfare.
Provide you with all of the source material we have used to gain a full understanding of this bill using the sponsor's publications, those of the Interior Design Certifying agency, and NC State Statutes.
It will provide guidance to help you (as part of a team) present these findings to your state Senator between now and March 31, a self imposed deadline to ensure we have negotiation room prior to the convening of the General Assembly.

This is the most important "ask" that AIA Advocacy has made of its members in decades.  The consequences of this bills passage are enormous with respect to the potential damage to Health Safety and Welfare in the State. We must act now!
